When the conference organizer asks the audience to participate in a discussion or debate, or pose a question, there is always a faffing around caused by passing the microphone. In order to reduce the faffing and offer an easier way to interact with the audience, Catchbox has been designed.
Catchbox is a new microphone that is throwable and inspires the audience to participate in the questions parts of the conference. Catchbox features a colorful padded cube with a wireless microphone. It can be thrown across a room and it can be passed from one person to another. Take it easy. It won’t be broken even when it drops. And, when it is thrown to fly through the air, or when it falls or is caught by the audience, it is able to automatically mute the sound. The inventors, Timo Kauppila, Pyry Taanila and Mikelis Studers have applied for patents for the tech. It is now under progress.
Dfferent apps of smartphones and cloud-based tools have tried to make it easier for audience to engage in the live events, allowing them to uses their own devices to participate in real time polls. However, inventors of Catchbox believe that audience can totally overlook the microphone.
Mikelis Studers, CTO of Catchbox, says that there are many products in the market to enhance audiences’ engagement, such as voting systems, citing event applications, and conventional wireless microphones. But he thinks that these products cost too much and it is complicated to set up and deploy. It often requires audience to download an application, and sometimes, it even requires some training. By contrast, Catchbox seems to be much simpler and more intuitive. Audience will understand what it is used for right away-- a throwable microphone.
Catchbox is available for preorder so far with the price of $549/€395. It includes a separate receiver. You can plug it into different sound systems, like stereos, computers and professional audio equipment. In fact, it is not the only product of the company. Studers says they will expand the business to the field of “crowd interaction devices”.

This Finland hardware startup not only targets at events with large number of audience but also aims at the markets like education, consultants, and company conference. Studers says, “There is a high expected value from every group session in those fields so we want to provide a tool that would make each session more efficient,” and “The internet has created new ways for sharing. We want to enhance sharing of ideas when people physically come together”.
